Wellbeing and Engagement Manager, £48,336pa, Permanent, 35 hours per week
It is an exciting time to join the Law Society of Scotland. We have an opportunity within the Education, Training and Qualification directorate for a Wellbeing and Engagement Manager. We are looking for a collaborative team player with great project management skills to join our Careers & Outreach team. The post has two main areas of focus, detailed below. The Careers & Outreach team has a wide remit, which includes:
Supporting aspiring lawyers with their career progression through designing and delivering engaging events and information sessions.
Working with schools and partners in the community as well as running our Lawscot Foundation charity to meet our social mobility aims.
Providing direction and support to the profession in relation to mental wellbeing through Lawscot Wellbeing.
At the centre of our organisation are the values of Respect, Openness, Progress, Inclusion, and Integrity which drive our teams to deliver the best possible service for the legal sector and beyond.
Key Responsibilities for this role
This role is broadly split into two parts, wellbeing and career-related engagement.
The wellbeing element of the role involves leading Lawscot Wellbeing, the Law Society of Scotland’s branded wellbeing-focused work. This part of the role’s portfolio sees the role-holder collaborating with another team member who also works in this area. The range of work includes leading the Lawscot Wellbeing Steering Group, running wellbeing events in collaboration with partners and collaborators, engaging with employers to promote good practice in mental health support and creating/sharing new resources that will be valuable for the Society’s membership.
The outreach element of the role involves working as part of the Careers & Outreach team to support aspiring lawyers, students and trainees with their career development. This can include planning and delivering events, designing and delivering presentations, 1:1 support, writing articles and blogs, and website content.
The role requires proven experience in project management, event management, building and maintaining stakeholder relationships and developing and delivering content in an engaging way. This role needs someone who can use their initiative and work proactively. There are some events/ campaigns that recur on an annual or regular basis, however much of the work comes about as a result of outreach and engagement work and identifying new opportunities to support the Law Society’s membership.
The post would require commitment to some in-person events and team engagement in Edinburgh but also in other areas of Scotland on occasion. Many of our events are delivered online, so this role will suit a wide range of candidates.
Key Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
We need someone with the ability to work proactively and independently; that is arguably one of the most important qualities we are looking for in a candidate. This is a demanding role that would require you to develop your own projects and lead existing initiatives independently. We are also looking for a confident communicator who can turn their hand to anything from speaking to individuals with questions about career development, to speaking at large events and hosting sessions with external speakers.
You would also need to be happy to work flexibly across a range of projects at once. You would need to manage your own time between careers engagement and wellbeing work, but within that you would often have several projects to juggle. Some may be smaller projects like one-off events and others are more strategic projects that might be developing over months or years, which you would need to keep moving. The ability to manage those priorities would be necessary to be successful in this role.
We don’t need you to be an expert in the fields of legal careers and wellbeing. While background knowledge would be beneficial, you primarily need to be able to see opportunities to connect members to those who have the expertise you need. For example, you might create a panel of legal trainees to speak at a student event focused on transitioning into the workplace. Or you might ask an experienced Manager/Partner to talk about the importance of leadership in relation to wellbeing in the legal profession for a group of members. Or you might utilise/grow our bank of external contributors who can bring specific knowledge, such as recruiters, mental health charity partners or professional speakers. Your role is in coordination, planning, management and effective delivery. We need a strong communicator who is used to delivery and engagement across a variety of audiences, platforms and settings, If you can Chair sessions then that would be a bonus, but training is available if you have not had this experience yet.
Some knowledge and/or experience of the legal profession would also be beneficial, however in-depth knowledge isn’t essential. Ideally, you will be able to show an understanding and appreciation of the types of key issues that relate to new lawyers and their career development, as well as the conversation around mental health for employers and individuals. Then when working in the role, we would expect you to be able to quickly assimilate knowledge and expertise or know when and how to work with others when required.
