Job Description

Are you looking for a role where you can build your skills to become a successful solicitor and be part of a thriving in-house legal team? We’re looking for a Trainee Solicitor to join our team – a key part of our business to contribute to our continued growth and success.

About the role

As a Trainee Solicitor you will work with our recoveries team, including all work prior to, during, and on conclusion of litigation. Within recoveries, you will be offered the opportunity to experience litigation at all stages, as well as alternative forms of dispute resolution, as well as challenging both your own colleagues and water wholesalers on issues facing customers.

We will expect hard work, diligence, and the confidence to take on work independently at an early stage.

We would be looking for the trainee to start in June 2025 but we are willing to be flexible to accommodate the successful candidate

What you'll be doing

  • Providing focused and commercial legal advice on all aspects of our debt recovery;
  • Supporting the recoveries team in all pre-litigation matters, including examining customer accounts, pre-litigation checks, particularising claims, and challenging market information;
  • Answering legal queries on property titles, contractual interpretation and application, the regulatory framework of the water industry, and the application of legislation;
  • Managing and/or undertaking litigation and other disputes, including preparation for and attendance at mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution;
  • Assisting on disputes with the water industry regulator and consumer bodies, as well as on disputes, litigation, and arbitration with water wholesalers;
  • Assisting with all legal work involving the department, including employment law-related work and data protection issues;
  • Reporting and working directly with the General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel and wider legal team on recoveries;
  • Work across the wider business, including commercial contract work, employment law-related matters, data protection issues, and dealing with the legal work related to the general commercial, financial and operational needs of the business.
  • Liaising with and managing external legal service providers;
  • Advising management on legal and risk matters; and
  • Working continuously to business KPIs and agreed targets.

What you'll be bringing to the role

  • Degree in Scots Law and current Diploma in Legal Practice.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent attention to detail and highly organised.
  • Flexible, with a positive attitude, and ability to work both collaboratively and autonomously.
  • Ability to work in a challenging and fast-paced environment, and to tight deadlines.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications.
